An Outing...

I came across a book named:  The Bully Pulpit - a book that holds words said and written by American presidents over the years on certain topics.  The following topics and the versions I chose underneath those topics, I like today...

On Opinion

The opinions of men are not the object of
civil government, nor under its jurisdic-
tion.

Thomas Jefferson
Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom
1779

On Religion

We, on our side, are praying to Him to give
us victory, because we believe we are right;
but those on the other side pray Him too,
for victory, believing they are right.  What
must He think of us?

Abraham Lincoln
To the Reverend Byron Sunderland, chaplain of the
Senate
1862

and then...

Both read the same Bible, and pray to the
same God;  and each invokes his aid
against the other.

Abraham Lincoln
Inaugural address
April 4, 1864

Another one I like ....

Is uniformity obtainable?  Millions of in-
nocent men, women, and children, since
the introduction of  Christianity, have
been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned;
yet we have not advanced an inch toward
uniformity.  What has been the effect of
coercion\?  To make one half the world
fools, and the other half hypocrites.  To
support roguery and error all over the earth
....

Thomas Jefferson
Notes on Virginia
1782

On Truth

I believe that truth is the glue that holds
Government together, not only our
Government, but civilization itself.

Gerald Ford
Inaugural address
August 9, 1974.
